Somalia’s entry into the East African Community (EAC) provides a unique opportunity to enhance climate resilience and integrate environmental policies within a regional framework. As climate change continues to threaten food security, water availability, and economic stability, collective action is essential to mitigate environmental risks and strengthen adaptation strategies.

This policy brief highlights the importance of regional collaboration in addressing shared environmental challenges, such as droughts, floods, desertification, and coastal erosion. Somalia’s inclusion in the EAC allows it to benefit from knowledge exchange, joint climate policies, and access to green investment opportunities. The brief emphasizes the need to harmonize environmental regulations, develop regional climate data repositories, and encourage sustainable investments in renewable energy and agriculture.

A key recommendation is mobilizing resources for green financing, enabling Somalia to access climate funds through the EAC’s existing frameworks. Additionally, integrating indigenous knowledge and community-driven solutions into policy-making will strengthen local adaptation efforts. Regional cooperation in disaster preparedness and early warning systems is also crucial to mitigate climate-induced crises.

By aligning with EAC environmental strategies, Somalia can build a more resilient and sustainable future, ensuring that climate policies are inclusive, data-driven, and regionally coordinated. This policy brief urges policymakers, development agencies, and environmental organizations to support Somalia’s climate adaptation journey, ensuring its integration into regional climate resilience initiatives while enhancing environmental security across the EAC.
