EACON 2024 Declaration

The East African Community Conference (EACON) 2024, held in Mogadishu, Somalia from June 24-25, 2024, marked a significant milestone in advancing regional integration following Somalia’s accession to the East African Community (EAC). In the presence of President H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, alongside government officials, business leaders, academia, and civil society, the conference underscored the theme of “Strengthening Regional Cooperation in the East African Community.”

The declaration congratulated Somalia on its formal accession to the EAC and celebrated the successful development of a roadmap for integration. It reaffirmed commitments to the EAC’s Regional Integration Pillars, Agenda 2063, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and international climate agreements such as the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement.

Key agendas emphasized in the declaration include:

Enhancing Regional Trade: Removing trade barriers, harmonizing customs procedures, and promoting infrastructure development.
Promoting Education & Skills Development: Encouraging collaboration among universities and vocational institutions within the EAC, with a focus on women and youth empowerment. Notably, GIZ will provide 1,000 scholarships for Somali youth.
Climate Resilience & Environmental Sustainability: Urging investments in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate adaptation strategies aligned with global standards.
Strengthening Public Health & Security: Advocating for collaborative healthcare systems and collective efforts to address regional conflicts, terrorism, and transnational crime.
The declaration concludes with a call for transparent governance, inclusive development, and active engagement from the private sector, civil society, and international partners to support Somalia’s integration and promote sustainable development across the region.EACON_Declaration_EN
